Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666)
The Invention of the Holy Cross

Church of San Lazzaro dei Mendicanti, Venice, Italy

The above title is supplied by the label in the church, but the painting might more appropriately be called the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Helena's hands are clasped in prayer, and the man on the left is a workman lifting the cross on high rather than the sick man of Invention images.

The bishop in the background would be Macarius. In the legends St. Helena was accompanied by an army when she came to Jerusalem, but the woman with the tiara at Helena's side seems to be a courtier of hers.
